In July 2022, a group of lesbians at a dyke march in Cologne, Germany, displayed banners with the words "lesbian: homosexual person of the female sex" and "lesbian: homosexual, not queer" in what could be seen as a protest against the concept of the [[cotton ceiling]] i.e. the notion that lesbians ought to consider males who identify as transwomen as part of their dating pool.

A member of the gang Latin Kings going by the name Synthia China Blast was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 1996 for the torture, rape, and murder of 13 year-old Ebony Nicole Williams three years prior.  He was released on parole in 2018, and fully freed in 2022 after completing his sentence.<ref name=reduxx-blast-released/>
Blast had come to media attention in the intervening years for being supported by the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SLRP) and various mainstream liberal outlets, who portrayed him as a transwoman wronged by the prison system.  Some activists unsuccessfully campaigned for Blast to be moved to a women's prison.
